Today you are going to learn how to express yourself when talking about holidays. Let’s take a look at some common mistakes people make when they write about holidays.

Original:

In Brazil, or at least in Brasília, we do not have many different celebrations. We celebrate Christmas, Easter, New Year, but those are celebrated world wide, and not in just some specific countries. However, we have Festa Junina here, which is a holiday that happens in June and July (and sometimes even in August), and it is particularly my favourite. It began in the northeast of Brazil, but it becam popular in the whole country. It is a party where people go to eat typical food such as peanut, Brazilian banana sweet, corn cake, hot dogs and - my favourite - hominies. Moreover, people go to dance with costumes around a big firepit, and X normally has a competition for those in which the best choreography wins.

Understand the reason behind each correction with our explanations:

1ª World wide - Despite being the combination of “world” and “wide”, “worldwide” is a compound adjective, therefore, just one word.

2ª Becam - A simple spelling error, or typo. The correct spelling of this word is “became”.

3ª Peanut, [...] sweet, [...] cake - In this case, the words should be in the plural form because we are talking about an event with several items of food.  Furthermore, we need to keep the parallelism in the sentence, and “hot dogs” was already in the plural form.

4ª X - A subject is missing in the construction that in this case would be “the party”.

5ª For those - An unnecessary addition that doesn’t fit the sentence. To use this construction, one option would be to rewrite the sentence as “...for those who like to create choreographies, in which the best choreography wins”
